Official recommendations the FAO-OIE International Scientific Conference on Avian Influenza and Wild Birds in Rome Italy (May 2006) stated that there was a need for improved understanding of wild bird behavior & migratory routes, improved understanding of potential interactions between wildlife, livestock, and humans, and that telemetry technology be incorporated into ornithological and epidemiological research.

In accordance with these recommendations, a satellite telemetry survey will be implemented in three African countries (Mali, Malawi and Nigeria) to facilitate monitoring of habitat use, intra-African regional movements, and inter-continental migrations of wild ducks.

This work will provide missing information on waterfowl migrations routes and ultimately lead to useful information on the potential spread of the disease within the African continent and should contribute to the prevention and the control of H5N1 avian influenza.
